"Confidence is high that Bazroy, under Jamie Spencer, can start taking steps towards his old form – if he gets anywhere near it he’ll pick this lot up and carry them"
The Grand National dust will have settled by the time Wolverhampton kicks off this evening. The unappealing prospect of doing hundreds of lines and still feel completely vulnerable with an Aintree placepot means we'll bide our time for the stuff that's unglamorous but at least more predictable, so to the safer ground of polytrack we go.
5.30 - Back to form when third last time (with subsequent winner La Capriosa back in fourth), and well drawn for his forcing style, Almaty Express is a must. If they go too quick, which is a distinct possibility with Trick Or Two also in the field, then Kheley should be there to pick up the pieces.
6.00 - This is hard. Ride A White Swan is going through a good spell, unlucky when seventh last time, but he's never one to bank on, so we'll include Hart of Gold too, who has ideal conditions and a fairer draw than when a close fourth over course and distance two starts back.
6.30 - The second division is no easier. It's easy to forgive Only A Game's recent below-par efforts at Southwell and he's well handicapped if back on song. Divertimento is similarly unpredictable but the last time he had these circumstances he was runner-up in February, and he's hopefully been refreshed by a short break.
7.00 - Only two places here, calling for caution. Clear Ice comes into his own on fibresand, but even his polytrack form gives him a good chance at this level. However, lightly-raced Revoltinthedesert is the really interesting one, down in grade and trip and representing the red-hot Marco Botti yard.
7.30 - Topcroft is the standout, but his absence is a concern, as is the fact his wins his hat-trick was completed on other (less sharp) all-weather tracks. Therefore, we'll take him on with Chief Exec, who's usually thereabouts over this course and distance, a comment that also applies to Gazboolou.
8.00 - A seller for the last leg, so not normally the time for a banker, but confidence is high that Bazroy, under Jamie Spencer, can start taking steps towards his old form - if he gets anywhere near it he'll pick this lot up and carry them.
