It's the opening day of the Flat season in Ireland and Timeform's Irish team bring you the three SmartPlays that they believe will get you off to the best possible start...

The opening maiden hurdle at Downpatrick looks an excellent opportunity for Timeform Betfair Racing Club horse Cause of Causes to open his account over jumps after a promising second to Maggie Neary at Gowran last time. A maiden winner in France for Pascal Bary, Cause of Causes impressed with he he went through the race on that occasion, only to be outsped by one that was useful on the level. The extra couple of furlongs looks sure to suit the close relative of Derby winner Kris Kin and he has far less to prove than his nearest market rival Sarabad.

Croisultan looks a fascinating runner in the six-furlong handicap at the Curragh due of at 15:30 having left Liam McAteer and joined the excellent Dermot Weld yard. A smart performer when at his best for his previous trainer, Croisultan has saved some of his best efforts for today's track and ran his best race of last term when third to Bewitched in the Renaissance Stakes. This afternoon's race is admitedly a competitive affair, but it wouldn't come as much of a surprise to see Croisultan improve for his new yard, and is worth taking a chance on at [10.0].

Coolnagree finished last season on the up and looks to have been found a reasonable opportunity to resume her progression after a break in the 16:30, also at the Curragh. She was able to improve quite markedly on the form she showed for Denis Cullen switched to her current yard, winning a Leopardstown nursery and only narrowly failing to defy a 7 lb rise behind the progressive Backbench Blues there next time. It seems extremely lenient that Coolnagree is allowed to race from the same mark and therefore looks well treated.
