Southwell is the venue for Rory's two recommended bets this afternoon

"While he (Hunters Belt) won’t improve in terms of fitness, the reapplication of cheekpieces will help sharpen him up, and a repeat of that effort is almost certainly good enough to win this."

Rory Delargy joins Paul Jacobs on Timeform Radio on Tuesday; the scheduled jumps cards have fallen to the weather, but with a brace of AW meetings remaining, there should be an opportunity for a bet or two. Rory goes through the Southwell card in order here...

Southwell starts with a couple of desperate-looking amateur riders' events in which only the brave should consider getting involved, and I wish placepot punters all the best with them. Wish Again is worth noting in the 5f handicap at 14:15 as he looks the type to take to this test. But it's hard to make him a bet on current evidence, and the next two races feature odds-on shots who are hard to oppose.

Upper Lambourn was a winning selection for me when scoring for Jamie Osborne last month, and while a move to Brian Ellison isn't the huge positive it would have looked a few months ago, he looks handicapped to score again in the 15:45. He took his fibresand record to 1711 when winning an apprentice claimer over 5f here last time, and the timefigure for that win was solid - so good in fact, that it gives him the edge over the rest of this field. Given that he's not fully exposed, and that Ellison is one of a handful of yards whose performers are guaranteed to thrive on this surface, he looks an excellent bet at current exchange odds of [7.8].

The following contest is full of potential improvers and too tricky to solve with confidence, leaving us with Hunters Belt as our second bet of the meeting in the finale at 16:45. Noel Wilson's charge was fit from hurdling when running the improved Magic Millie very close over C&D last time, and while he won't improve in terms of fitness, the reapplication of cheekpieces will help sharpen him up, and a repeat of that effort is almost certainly good enough to win this. It's again worth noting that his timefigure over C&D last time is the best any of these have achieved in the last year. Of his rivals, Unex Picasso almost blew it with a slow start when scoring here last month, and won't be winning over this shorter trip if repeating those antics - he traded at [950.0] in the run there and needed the leaders to stop in order to get up. Three White Socks was raised a stone for beating rubbish here two starts back, and was well beaten on his return, suggesting he'll need an ease in the weights before winning. All in all, Hunters Belt looks to have an easier assignment than last time, and appears the day's best bet.

Recommended Bets:

Back Hunters Belt in the 16:45 Southwell @ [3.65] (NAP)
Back Upper Lambourn in the 15:45 Southwell @ [7.8] (NB)
