Will Rory have a winner at Newbury

"Claret Cloak has the look of an odds-on shot to me, and I’ll be gutted if he doesn’t win again."

Rory Delargy is the pundit on Timeform Radio this afternoon, and he joins Big Al Dudman to take you through a packed afternoon of action. Here are his best bets...

I've been a big fan of Claret Cloak (15:10 Newbury) - today's best bet - since seeing him dot up in a Wincanton bumper in the autumn, and I see no reason to desert him after he justified my confidence in him at Sandown last time. In my opinion, he's going to prove best at 2m on good ground, and it's under those conditions that he's been successful so far. It's easy to poke holes in the form of the Sandown contest, with Emma Lavelle's gelding better suited by the slow pace there, but he strikes me as having much more to offer in this sphere before making the grade as a chaser - it would be no surprise to see him lining up in the 2015 Champion Chase, although I haven't found a bookmaker willing to lay odds on such an eventuality!

The main danger to Claret Cloak comes in the form of Nicky Henderson's Malt Master who was a facile winner at Newcastle last time. If the Sandown win of my choice is open to criticism, then it's possible to drive a bus through the holes in Malt Master's win. The runner-up that day was given a James Reveley special - spotting the winner 20 lengths off a pedestrian gallop, and doing well to finish so close. I'm not convinced the form amounts to a great deal, and am surprised that the pair are disputing favouritism. Claret Cloak has the look of an odds-on shot to me, and I'll be gutted if he doesn't win again.

At Stratford, The Bear Trap looks interesting in the opener at 14:10. Brought along very steadily to date, he improved to finish fourth at Ludlow last time behind the regally-bred Swing Bowler, despite again not being given a hard time. That form has been franked by wins for the first and second, and while handicaps are the obvious way forward, this novice hurdle looks eminently winnable without blowing a potentially lenient mark. The step up to 19f on good ground looks ideal, and he looks overpriced at around [8.0].

Best bet on the Stratford card, though, is the well handicapped What of It in the 2½m handicap chase at 14:45. Often ridden by his enthusiastic (cough!) owner Tim Edwards, he returned to form for a change of jockey at Warwick last time, finishing a gallant second to Island Life in a hunter over this trip. With the winner scooting home in a stronger looking contest during the week, Tom George's gelding looks to have chunks in hand on an uninspiring bunch of rivals. Paddy Brennan is a more than able substitute for George's brother-in-law (cough, cough!), and he looks a steering job.

Recommended Bets
