Will A Z Warrior land another Breeders' Cup win for Bob Baffert?

"A Z Warrior could be the real deal."

Terry Norman is in the pundit's chair for tonight's action at Churhchill Downs and two races for the ladies will hold particular interest

Trying something new has one of two possible results, a pleasant surprise or crushing deflation. Eclipse-winning trainer Bob Baffert experienced the latter when A Z Warrior made her dirt debut at Belmont three weeks ago.

The daughter of Bernadini, favoured for the Juvenile Fillies Mile (22:10 Churchill Downs), arrived for the Grade 1 Frizette in New York on the back of a disappointing effort in the Darley Debutante at Del Mar.

In disposing of Spinaway winner R Heat Lightning (opposes again), however, A Z Warrior promoted herself to the head of the queue with a stunning display. Baffert expressed surprise at the performance, admitting the dirt surface was an unknown.

R Heat Lightning, briefly held up at the top of the stretch, should get closer with the extra 100 yards, while Tell A Kelly is a danger if transferring her excellent form (been working badly) on a synthetic surface. Awesome Feather, meanwhile, comes into the event with an unblemished record of five from five, albeit in easier company and is the unknown factor.

However, A Z Warrior has worked superbly since the Frizette and with Delightful Mary being the only other speed horse, pilot Martin Garcia has more options than most. She could be the real deal.

Todd Pletcher has an awful record in the Breeders Cup - just three wins from 66 - but admits he arrives at Kentucky with his strongest ever team.

Uncle Mo (tomorrow) is arguably his best chance but he also has high hopes for Life At Ten (23:30 Churchill Downs) in the Ladies' Classic over nine furlongs. The mare comes into the event with a record of seven wins from her last eight starts.

In landing the Beldame at Belmont, Life At Ten confirmed her superiority over Unrivalled Belle (three from three) and her Beyer figures stack up with favourite Blind Luck and the strongly-fancied Havre de Grace.

Blind Luck may only be only pony-sized but has three Grade 1s to her name - five in total - this year and had excuses for her defeat in her prep race at Philadelphia .

Jerry Hollendorfer's mare will be helped by a plethora of pace and, importantly, has a victory over course and distance. Harve De Grace, winner of said race at Philadelphia, is improving fast but is compromised by her stall 11 posting and the presence of trailblazers, Malibu Prayer and Acting Happy.

There are no indentifying negatives for Life At Ten. She has a perfect draw in one, her stalking style is ideal for the make-up of the race and is another who has greatly impressed work watchers.
