Most of the excitement takes place on Merseyside this afternoon but there's a horse running at Newcastle that Terry Norman couldn't resist having a bet on...

Ian Williams had resisted the temptation to add headgear to his talented Wayward Prince (14:30 Aintree) after his lazy but ultimately superb third to Bostons Angel is the RSA chase at Cheltenham.

The cold facts of a one length defeat looks superb but hides the fact that Wayward Prince ran in snatches and was one of the first off the bridle - yet, in truth, the son of Alflora would probably have won in another 100 yards.

There is the worry that the festival effort will have left its mark - the selection always makes things hard for himself - but he is as tough as teak and it's hoped the visor does the trick.
Winning form over course and distance (albeit over hurdles) is a bonus. Second favourite Quito de la Roque wants more give and a stiffer test while Master Of The Hall was soundly beaten in the RSA.

Tipping in apprentice handicaps is not an avenue I explore often but the opportunity to support Ravi River (18:25 Newcastle) was too great to pass up. Admittedly, the bulk of Brian Ellison's gelding's best form has been on the all weather but his latest second to Hits Only Jude was boosted by the winner bolting in again on Tuesday.

Ravi River would have won under stronger handling at Musselburgh (Dale Swift takes over today) and the son of Barathea can run off the same mark before a 4lb rise from Saturday, effectively putting him outside this 0-60 band.

There is plenty of pace in the race to suit a hold-up performer in Ravi River, the draw in 14 and the form of the Ellison yard are additional positives.

Recommended Bets
Back Wayward Prince @ [3.7] in the 14:30 at Aintree
Back Ravi River @ [5.6] in the 18:25 at Newcastle
