Isn't That Lucky (light colurs, centre) about to storm up the hill in the 2009 Jewson; the Topham Chase is tailor made for Jonjo O'Neill's runner and he can give Sam Waley-Cohen another winner over the National fences
"The other to interest me is an old friend - Isn't That Lucky who ran a huge race in the Kim Muir before falling at the second last and although the fall is a bit of a worry, he's normally a very good jumper; any doubts are reflected in a price of 24 on Betfair and he's a sporting nap. The booking of Sam Waley-Cohen is an excellent one as he has a truly exceptional record over these fences."
His nap of the meeting when second in the Jewson Chase at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival and again tipped up when, erm, tipping up in this year's Kim Muir, is Rory Delargy taking loyalty to the extreme or is a horse called Isn't That Lucky finally to live up to his name?
I know, I know - it's hard to know sometimes whether you're being clever in staying loyal to a well handicapped horse or simply following one off a cliff, but to that end I'm tipping up two of my favourite horses in training.
14:35 Aintree Matalan.co.uk Mildmay Novices' Chase:
Seven of these come straight from Cheltenham, although they contested four different races - the RSA Chase (Burton Port, Knockara Beau), the Jewson (Lenabane, Take The Breeze, Door Boy) the Kim Muir (Khatchaturian) and the William Hill Trophy (Ogee) and it should pay to concentrate on the pair who contested the Grade 1 race. Knockara Beau is one of five potential front runners in the line-up, but he proved with a rallying fourth in the RSA that he is capable of coming back when headed and he's a horse I adore. Many will call him lucky to have finished so close there but I believe he would have finished second had the race panned out differently. He's a horse who relishes a battle and has done nothing but thrive since going chasing, putting up his best performance last time and promising more to come. I take him to reverse the form with RSA runner up Burton Port who will be favourite and he will be an even better horse in time when allowed to race at even longer trips.
15:45 Aintree John Smith's Topham Chase:
A hugely open race but I will concentrate on two. Prudent Honour is of some interest after an excellent third in the NH Chase at Cheltenham but this race is primarily a sighter for him before he is campaigned towards next year's Grand National - he looks a perfect type for the race in 2011 and I'll be backing him accordingly to ensure my retirement. The other to interest me is an old friend - Isn't That Lucky who I suggested as a bet in the Kim Muir. He ran a huge race that day before falling at the second last and although winded, lives to fight again. That fall is a bit of a worry although he's normally a very good jumper while there remains a concern that his wind may fail him but those doubts are reflected in a price of 24 on Betfair and he's a sporting nap. The booking of Sam Waley-Cohen is an excellent one as he has a truly exceptional record over these fences.
