Daryl Jacob is in my opinion, the most improved jockey riding over jumps this season and he can cement his rise up the ranks by landing a double at Newbury this afternoon, writes Rory Delargy.

Jacob takes a rare ride for the Ben De Haan yard when he teams up with My Shamwari in the opener at the Berkshire venue at 13:30. The son of Flemensfirth looks a decent prospect on looks and confirmed that impression with a win in a fair maiden hurdle at Southwell at the beginning of December. He beat Tanto Faz by less than a length that day but looked value for a bit further and will appreciate the likely strong pace here. De Haan is a more than capable handler but his low profile will ensure that My Shamwari goes off at a double figure price. Back him win and place.

In the 14:40, The Queen's Gold Award will be a warm order after his facile Ffos Las success for which he carries a mandatory 7lb penalty, but he strikes me as a horse best caught fresh and I'm more than happy to oppose him at skinny odds. It's possible that Helen's Vision could bounce back at a big price at her favourite track but I'll row in with bottomweight Alfie Spinner who represents Daryl Jacob's principal patron Nick Williams. Alfie Spinner improved last time to win a novice at Exeter in some style from Swincombe Rock. He will appreciate the two furlong longer trip today and looks feasibly handicapped on a mark of 115. He's trading at [7.4] on the exchange and again rates an excellent win and place bet with the favourite taking such a chunk of the market.
