Davy Russell rides Irish SmartPlay Thynetocatcher at Punchestown today

"Her bumper form is the key to her chance in this ordinary mares maiden though, and it is strong enough to suggest she'll be very hard to beat granted a fair shake of the dice"

An interesting card at Punchestown provides today's Irish action, and Timeform's Irish team have come up with a place lay and two win selections.....

Little Green (14:30) has her fair share of ability, winning a Grade 2 hurdle last term and already runner-up a couple of times this season, but she has more than her share of temperament to go with it, often hanging right and carrying her head high. She's got a bit to find with the likes of Psycho, Pozyc and The Bishop Looney this afternoon, while Maggie Connolly is still open to progression, so Little Green looks a solid place lay at the prices, especially as she's yet to prove her stamina for two and a half miles.

Things haven't gone according to plan for Thynetocatcher (15:35) over hurdles so far, scoping badly when pulled up at Roscommon on debut and then falling at Limerick last time. Her bumper form is the key to her chance an ordinary mares maiden though, and it is strong enough to suggest she'll be very hard to beat granted a fair shake of the dice. She has won two of her four starts in that sphere, including a listed race at Navan in November (had two subsequent maiden hurdle winners behind) when she left the firm impression today's sort of trip would suit.

The two-and-three-quarter mile handicap just over half an hour later looks a competitive event. Too Late To Sell's recent second looks strong form, Dr Proctor is steadily progressive and Followmeuptocarlow goes into the race on the back of a win. All of this is reflected by the market though, so the one who could represent some value is Tornant. He's been a bit hit and miss in handicaps so far but showed his current mark to be workable when fourth at Fairyhouse last month and could be just the type to benefit from a more severe type of headgear (cheekpieces replaced by blinkers), while he's also unexposed at the trip.
