Jessie Harrington trains SmartPlay King Ferdinand
"He [King Ferdinand] took really well to polytrack when bolting up in a Kempton handicap last year and bettered that form when second at Ascot in July..."
It's Friday night which means evening racing under the lights at Dundalk and three more SmartPlays from Timeform's Irish team....
Carefree Smile has certainly been given a chance by the handicapper and it's interesting that her top yard are persevering with her in the handicap over an extended ten furlongs at Dundalk this evening, but she is still entitled to come on for this first outing since November 2010 and may have to play second fiddle to Dart Queen (18:45). Admittedly, Dart Queen is yet to get off the mark but she hasn't had the rub of the green either start this term and looked like a winner waiting to happen when fourth at the track on Wednesday, left with plenty to do the way things developed and meeting trouble in running, and is able to race off the same mark, while the drop back from a mile and a half isn't a problem.
The 20:15 looks a tightly-knit affair at first glance, but if there's one in the field who is ahead of their mark then it is King Ferdinand. He took really well to polytrack when bolting up in a Kempton handicap last year and bettered that form when second at Ascot in July, pulling clear with one who went on to enjoy listed success later in the campaign. He lost his way a bit after that but a change of scenery could well rejuvenate him, and the Harrington yard are in good form at present. The potential downside is his stamina for a mile as he's yet to tackle beyond seven furlongs, but he is bred to stay and this track tends to favour speedier types, so he's worth the benefit of the doubt.
The closing sprint handicap at 21:15 contains a field of largely exposed sorts, albeit several who are in reasonable form, but the one to be with at the likely prices could be the three-year-old Battleroftheboyne. He won a couple of nurseries at the Curragh last year and made an encouraging return over seven furlongs there last month, headed a furlong out and eventually finishing fourth to the progressive Coolnagree. Now back at six furlongs and well drawn in stall three he has plenty in his favour, not least a lower all weather mark, even though he has done enough in three starts on this surface to suggest he should be fully effective tonight.
