"...this is essentially a weak race in which a number have question marks hanging over them, so siding with the solid Waterski could be the way to go."
A relatively low-key Sunday in the UK, but this handicap chase at Kelso looks eminently crackable...
Rambling Minster was in the form of his life in 2008/9, winning at Cheltenham and Haydock. He has generally been out of sorts this term but went with more zest at Doncaster last time and the fitting of first-time blinkers catches the eye.
Or De Grugy doesn't stand out as particularly well treated and turned in a poor effort last time, but has tremendous record at this track (successful here in February), so is difficult to write off.
Nelson Du Ronceray mixed hurdles and fences in 2008/9, winning in both spheres. He has shaped with promise on each start over hurdles this term but there are serious doubts as to whether he'll see out this markedly longer trip.
Drever Route has seemed fragile in the past but is doing little wrong at present, and won with a bit to spare at Catterick last month. That was over 2m, however, and he needs to prove himself at this much longer trip.
The Shy Man won at Kelso last May and was back to his best when scoring at Bangor last month. He is still capable from this reassessed mark but is often let down by his jumping and/or attitude (including last time).
Justwhateverulike won back-to-back handicap chases at this track earlier in the season and seems to remain in top form, likely to have gone close but for a late mistake at Ayr recently, so warrants respect.
Reel Charmer is useful hurdler and she took advantage of a lower chase mark when scoring at Cartmel in August. She has been out of sorts since and, though fresh from a break, has yet to convince at this trip.
Mokum is well treated on the pick of his form, including two wins over a similar trip in 2007/8, but his lazy racing style was still apparent when well beaten both comeback starts this term and others are more convincing.
Minouchka is a prolific winning pointer who has also been successful three times under Rules (including over C&D in May). She doesn't look in much form at present, however.
Nelliedonethat was better than ever when winning from 8 lb lower over 3m at Musselburgh in December, but his jumping hasn't been so good since. He needs to up his game again to give his owners a memorable win here.
Primrose Time is a better chaser than hurdler, and shaped with encouragement when fourth here last time, but she is unlikely to be suited by this longer trip.
Texas Holdem is a one-time fairly useful hurdler, but has been very lightly raced in recent years and hasn't offered much in three starts over fences, let down by his jumping both starts this season.
Waterski goes well round here, and got off the mark in a C&D handicap in Novemeber. He is now 6 lb higher and didn't shape as if obviously well treated last time, but the return to this trip will suit.
VERDICT
Rambling Minster is on a very tempting mark and Drever Route could well progress further on the back of his recent Catterick success, but this is essentially a weak race in which a number have question marks hanging over them, so siding with the solid Waterski could be the way to go.
