"Shamwari Lodge was gradually progressive in good handicaps last year, winning twice at up to this trip. She produced a good effort when upped to Group 2 company at Longchamp in October and sets a good standard for the rest here."
A mixture of strong handicappers, Group performers and a couple of unexposed types make the Snowdrop Fillies' Stakes at Kempton on Saturday an intriguing contest....
Black Dahlia was a three-time winner at up to this trip in handicaps last year. She wasn't disgraced on either start at this level afterwards, but there are others who are more convincing following her recent last of eleven when back in a handicap.
Carcinetto has typically been heavily campaigned this winter, not managing a win but holding her form pretty well as usual all the same. 0-17 on all previous attempts at this level, though.
Chantilly Tiffany improved towards the end of the 2008 campaign, landing a seven-furlong soft-ground Group 3 in Germany. She failed to scale the same heights last year, but it's quite possible the change of stable could trigger a revival.
Charlotte Point is a front runner who bagged a couple of handicaps at around this trip in the first half of 2009, but lost her way afterwards and it's difficult to be confident on her belated return.
Confidentiality is a multiple winner for her current yard, her last win coming on her return from Ireland in December. She has produced creditable efforts in handicaps since, but the blinkers need to enable her to pull out a lot more.
Faldal is lightly raced, having had just seven starts to date, winning twice. She made a promising start for Gaye Kellaway when fourth at Doncaster last month, but there is a fair bit more needed to make her mark here.
Island Sunset is unbeaten in four starts, including over C&D, she showed a willing attitude to keep her record intact in a handicap last time. She has earned her chance at this higher level and she has claims if progressing again.
Mosqueras Romance showed marked improvement when bolting up in a C&D handicap in July. She took another step forward when finishing runner-up on her return from an eight-month absence recently and she is no forlorn hope if continuing in the same vein.
Please Sing was a six furlong Group 2 winner as a juvenile. She went close on several occasions at up to this trip in good company during a winless campaign in 2009 and not without hope if she is fully wound up on her return.
Seradim was as good as ever during 2009, despite being unable to add to her two juvenile wins.
Wouldn't discount her if the cheekpieces have the desired effect, but her yard has yet to get on the scoreboard this year.
Shamwari Lodge was gradually progressive in good handicaps last year, winning twice at up to this trip. She produced a good effort when upped to Group 2 company at Longchamp in October and sets a good standard for the rest here.
Victoria Sponge was a three-time winner in seven-furlong handicaps on turf last term for Richard Hannon. She has struggled on both her starts against listed opposition since joining her current yard, though, and this is no easier.
Verdict
Shamwari Lodge made up into a useful performer last year, shaping as though pattern races would be within her grasp when seventh in a French Group 2 event on her final start in 2009 and can make a winning return. Chantilly Tiffany could well bounce back for her new stable after changing hands for 320,000 gns last year and looks the chief threat, ahead of Mosqueras Romance.
