"Speed Master is taken to build on a promising handicap debut at Sandown last month..."

Two selections at Ffos Las and one at Market Rasen make up Sunday's Timeform SmartPlays...

Swansbrook (14:45) won a bumper, a race over hurdles and one over fences when trained by Alan King, and has run with credit in two of his four starts for Brendan Powell, in competitive handicap hurdles on each occasion. Today's race represents a far easier task for the nine-year-old, taking a marked drop in class having contested races won by the likes of Our Father and Hildisvini, and, having looked laboured on a number of occasions and coming under pressure earlier than might have been expected, he is now fitted with a pair of cheekpieces in the hope they can spark a return to the winners' enclosure. He clearly comes with risks attached but, as he is 10 lb clear on Timeform weight-adjusted ratings, he has to be worth chancing at the [4.9] available at present.

Our sole selection at Market Rasen is Bally Gunner (15:35), who finished well held in his four starts in bumpers but is now finding his feet over hurdles and caught the eye at Exeter last time, left with far too much ground to make up having travelled smoothly before finishing well for just a hands-and-heels ride. The seven-year-old is open to further progress, racing here off the same mark as at Exeter and, although both Monkey Milan and Royal Entourage are also open to improvement, Bally Gunner is unexposed over this longer trip and is worth backing at the [9.8] currently available.

Our final SmartPlay comes in the 16:25 at Ffos Las, where Speed Master, trained by Nicky Henderson, is taken to build on a promising handicap debut at Sandown last month. That effort came after the six-year-old won his first three starts over hurdles and, having taken the eye beforehand, Speed Master looked a real threat two out before weakening on the run-in. Although today's contest is over the same distance, the slightly less testing conditions ought to be in his favour, and he looks a leading contender racing off the same mark as at Sandown.
