"Graham Gibbons takes the ride on Hitchens and it’s notable that of his twelve wins on Knavesmire, nine of them have come over sprint distances.."
Three selections for York's only Sunday fixture of the season.
Backers of Charlie Cool (3.10) had their fingers burnt in the mile and a quarter claimer twelve months ago as Gary Bartley delivered a clever ride on Middlemarch to make all alone on the far rail. It seems significant that Ruth Carr's charge lines up for the race again having won three handicaps in the meantime and he must be taken to gain compensation. He's very much the classiest horse in the field and drops back in grade having been contesting some of the top handicaps this summer.
Hitchens (3.45) came into his own this time last year and it looks to be the same scenario this time around. As a result he's well worth a wager in the valuable six-furlong handicap. Given what happened with the draw at the Ebor meeting that needs keeping an eye on in the opening races, but David Barron's charge could have had it a lot worse in stall 16, and perhaps more crucially, is a lot fresher than most sprint handicappers at this time of year having had just four runs all season. Graham Gibbons takes the ride and it's notable that of his twelve wins on Knavesmire, nine of them have come over sprint distances.
Mistoffelees (5.20) looks the blot on the handicap in the finale and can send favourite backers home with bulging wallets. He's come into his own under Talib Hussain this term, winning handicaps at Yarmouth and Doncaster, and looks the type who will continue on an upward curve for a good deal longer for Luca Cumani.
