"A Dante entry may look fanciful at this stage, but there’s little doubting Rigidity has enough class to comfortably defy an opening mark of 77."

Aintree is the centre of attention for most on Thursday, but Timeform's Jimmy Cooper has found an extra two on the Flat at Leicester...

The best bet of the day runs in the 3.25 at Leicester, in the shape of the Henry Cecil- trained Rigidity. The selection is a half-brother to the 2006 Derby runner-up Dragon Dancer, as well as the smart stayer Ajaan, also trained by Cecil. Rigidity was held back by inexperience on his debut in August, but made no mistake at the second time of asking at Yarmouth the following month over a mile. The race wouldn't have played to the strengths of Rigidity on that occasion, with the extra two furlongs here certain to suit. A Dante entry may look fanciful at this stage, but there's little doubting Rigidity has enough class to comfortably defy an opening mark of 77.

The other handicap on the card at Leicester provides the second bet, with Slugger O'Toole (5.10) down to a mark too low to ignore. The five-year-old was undoubtedly disappointing last year for Stuart Williams, but it's worth pointing out he contested far stronger handicaps than this in the process. Returning off a mark of 75, and with shrewd connections, it will be more than a little surprising if Slugger O'Toole doesn't take advantage at some point in the near future, and market confidence behind the selection would further increase optimism.

Over at Aintree, Ainama looks a horse that must be kept on side in the concluding handicap at 5.30. The selection is well handicapped on the form he displayed in novice company last year, posting a career best over course-and-distance at this meeting. Both efforts in handicaps this year do little to alter that view, and he simply hasn't stayed three miles on both occasions. With this test far more suitable, Ainama rates the most likely winner, though Wishfull Thinking and Silverhand are just two of any number of potential dangers.
