"An opening mark of 79 may grossly underestimate the ability of Mercoliano with the promise of plenty more to come up in trip, and he should take care of these en-route to better things."
Timeform's Jimmy Cooper has trawled through the five British cards and has found three worth keeping on side...
Peter Island was impressive when making a winning return at Kempton on Thursday, and a 9 lb rise may not prevent the follow up in the 6.10 Brighton. The selection capitalised on a lower all-weather mark on that occasion, but still looks well handicapped under a penalty back on turf. Crucially, Peter Island boasts winning form at the track, which is a huge positive given the idiosyncratic nature of the course, and a bold run seems assured from this speedy front runner.
The three-year-old handicap at Folkestone (5.05) promises to be one of the most informative races of the day, featuring three potential improvers in Secretive, Dubai Bounty and Buffett. All three have scope in handicaps off their current marks, but Buffett really stands out here now tackling a more suitable trip. The Luca Cumani trained-colt wasn't knocked about in four runs last year, and, given the stable's excellent record in handicaps, Buffett's true potential will surely be revealed this year, and he is taken to make a winning return.
There is perhaps no more upwardly mobile yard around at present than Marco Botti, and his Mercoliano rates a confident selection in the 3.55 at Kempton. Mercoliano shaped with plenty of promise in all-weather maidens last year, but looked a totally different proposition having been gelded in the interim when a comfortable winner on return in February. An opening mark of 79 may grossly underestimate the ability of Mercoliano with the promise of plenty more to come up in trip, and he should take care of these en-route to better things.
