"Given the free-going pair Tchico Polos and Fiendish Flame will more than likely compromise their respective chances at the head of affairs, French Opera should be backed with confidence at any price around 1.7."
Something for everyone on Saturday, and Timeform's Jimmy Cooper has found three bets spread across Ayr, Doncaster and Newbury...
The Scottish Grand National is the feature on the Ayr card, but it's the Grade 2 novice chase at 2.15 that provides the opening bet of the day. French Opera has already enjoyed a fine campaign in just four starts, winning his first three prior to recording a career best when second in the Grand Annual off top weight last month. That piece of form is comfortably the best on offer, and given the free-going pair Tchico Polos and Fiendish Flame will more than likely compromise their respective chances at the head of affairs, French Opera should be backed with confidence at any price around 1.7.
Over at Newbury, the Spring Cup at 2.35 is unsurprisingly a difficult puzzle to solve, but that will ensure there's plenty of value to be had, and Huzzah fits the bill as an overpriced runner. The five-year-old hasn't won for nearly two years, but it's hard to pick holes in how he acquitted himself in strong handicaps last year. Now 3 lb below his last winning mark, he is evidently handicapped to go very close, and Huzzah's showing in the Lincoln has to be forgiven given he blew his chance at the start. Whilst it has to be said that both Irish Heartbeat and Mull of Killough are handicappers to keep on side this season, that is reflective in their respective prices, wheres Huzzah could well go off at 17.0+.
Later on at Doncaster, Mark Johnston's improving sprinter Jarrow looks the one to be with in a competitive-looking sprint at 5.40. Jarrow justified strong support when confirming the promise of his three starts at two in taking fashion over six furlongs at Kempton last month, despite not having things go entirely his way. A 7 lb rise is far from prohibitive back on turf, and, with the prospect of more to come, Jarrow rates the most likely winner.
