Leopardstown Racecourse: The stage for four Grade 1s on Sunday
"This race has cut up in recent days but it's still hard to see why Quel Esprit is such a warm order and he has to be taken on at the prices."
Timeform run the rule over the field for the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown....
Bostons Angel landed third Grade 1 of novice season in RSA Chase at Cheltenham and not done with when unseating at Down Royal on return. Bit laboured when third at Sandown last time but now tried in cheekpieces.
China Rock is a very smart chaser who won Grade 2 and Grade 3 early last season before in frame in couple of Grade 1s. Sure to be sharper for recent spin over hurdles and accorded respect in substandard renewal.
Follow The Plan is a very smart chaser on his day who was a fortunate winner of the Guinness Gold Cup at Punchestown last season but ran a cracker when second at Thurles last time could go well if on a going day.
Magnaminity is a rangy gelding who progressed well last term, winning twice prior to going close in Grade 1s at Leopardstown and Cheltenham. Probably needed reappearance in Lexus, but jumping is a slight worry.
Quel Esprit failed to complete in trio of Grade 1s last term, but has been mopping up in calmer waters so far this time around, taking minor event at Naas and Grade 3 at Thurles. Unexposed at 3m as well.
Roberto Goldback landed 3m listed chase at Cork in 2010/11 and might have followed up but for unseating last in Grade 1 at Punchestown. Balance of efforts this term suggest he's going to come up short, though.
Treacle has been back to best of late, making all to win at Gowran in October and then a good second in competitive handicap over this C&D. Flying too high in this sort of company, though.
Timeform 1-2-3
1. Bostons Angel
2. China Rock
3. Quel Esprit
Timeform Verdict: This race has cut up in recent days but it's still hard to see why Quel Esprit is such a warm order and he has to be taken on at the prices. Bostons Angel won a couple of Grade 1s around this track last term and is worth chancing now refitted with headgear, while China Rock is another to consider.
