Newton Abbot: The venue for the Lord Mildmay Memorial Chase
"Stewarts House and Lord Ryeford are lurking on attractive marks, and the former is risked now making his debut for the red-hot Tim Vaughan stable..."
Sunday's race of the day is the Lord Mildmay Memorial Handicap Chase from Newton Abbot...
Safari Journey is a useful chaser on his going days and back to form with second over 2m here in April. Well held in Swinton Hurdle last time, and will appreciate return to fences, but stamina worries at new trip.
Sir Ian is a free-going front runner who has continued his improvement in recent runs, eased to win by wide margin at Worcester last time from High Jack. Now 9 lb higher, but sure to go well again.
Classic Swain is a talented chaser who was runner-up to Passato in this last year. Has looked increasingly moody of late, though and Daryl Jacob prefers That'll Do. Blinkers replaced with cheekpieces now.
Mamlook is a useful handicap hurdler who won twice over fences last season. Jumped hesitantly when just a respectable fourth in Red Rum Chase on handicap bow in April, but capable of better over fences.
That'll Do landed novice chase at Stratford in May, but hasn't seen his races out when second on last 2 starts. Presumably the choice of Daryl Jacob, but handicapper taken no risks.
Pilgrims Lane was successful 3 times in 2010 and back to best when scoring twice in May. Had 3 of these behind when third in Summer Plate on debut for this yard last time, but still readily held, and more needed now.
Invisible Man was twice successful up to 2¾m last summer and generally run well since, winning at Worcester in May. Better than distance beaten in Summer Plate last time, but weak finish there disconcerting.
Wake Board has improved since sent back over fences for current yard, winning at Bangor and Wetherby (2½m). Found out in better contests since, and tendency to pull hard often compromises his chance.
Hoo La Baloo dropped long way in the weights before winning 2½m handicap chase in June under this rider. Not at best over shorter trips since, and no forlorn hope now back under optimum conditions.
Buck Mulligan was much improved in 2009/10 on joining current yard, and shaped well on return to this sphere when third to Pilgrims Lane at Ludlow (25f). Couldn't build on that last time, however.
North Island ended 2010/11 in doldrums, but bounced back to best when winning at Market Rasen in July, and shaped best of quintet who ran in Summer Plate there last time when tried blinkered. Respected.
Stewarts House lost his way since winning valuable handicap chase at Leopardstown in February 2010 for Arthur Moore, but potentially well treated, and has joined a yard in red hot form, so of serious interest.
Life Of A Luso is much improved for current stable, winning trio of handicap chases, including over C&D. Not at best over hurdles last time, but that run excusable, and no forlorn hope.
I'm A Legend enjoyed a purple patch when winning 3 times over fences at the back end of last year. May have needed outing over hurdles at Bangor last month, but will need to raise his game to be competitive here.
Bushwacker is an error-prone chaser who showed what he's capable of when cutting out mistakes with 2 ready wins this summer, latter for new yard. No impact last time, though, and this looks too competitive.
Lord Ryeford has been seen to better effect under professional handling last twice, and beat a subsequent winner at Bangor last time in ready fashion. Still well treated on old form, and now tried in cheekpieces.
Timeform 1-2-3
1. Stewarts House
2. Lord Ryeford
3. Sir Ian
Timeform's View: Sir Ian is sure to make a bold bid from the front, though Stewarts House and Lord Ryeford are lurking on attractive marks, and the former is risked now making his debut for the red-hot Tim Vaughan stable.
