Who will be first past the post in the Sandown Classic Trial?

"Dordogne will be suited by the slightly longer trip and is given the nod over the Hannon pair Measuring Time and Auld Burns."

It's been a while since the Sandown Classic Trial has had a significant bearing on what's happened at Epsom, but today's race should at least throw up a few to follow....

Auld Burns hasn't stopped improving since beating Acomb winner Waiter's Dream on debut and looked different proposition trying this trip for first time in valuable sales race at Newmarket on comeback.

Barbican went unraced for Aidan O'Brien but beat 2 subsequent winners at Wolverhampton on debut and followed up in handicap at Doncaster again in good style. Sure to improve again.

Canna caught the eye at Newmarket on debut last year amd shaped well again on comeback at Doncaster earlier this month, keeping on after being set lot to do. Will improve again but lot on plate here.

Dordogne created a good impression when making winning debut at Goodwood last year and again when scoring in listed race at Newmarket on reappearance. Sure to progress further as stamina is tested more.

Genius Beast was third in 2 of the warmest 1m maidens last summer won by Frankel and Picture Editor before getting off mark readily enough at Haydock. Sure to do better at 1¼m and well worth a step up in grade.

Hurricane Higgins was a very easy winner of a Lingfield maiden on debut but still green as grass when second in minor event at Deauville on latest run. Bound to keep improving but this a tough ask on turf debut.

Jackaroo won easily on 2-y-o debut at Gowran last May. Didn't really progress afterwards but appeals as type to do better at 1¼m+ this year, and anything yard sends over entitled to respect.

Masked Marvel boasts a smart pedigree and was well backed ahead of a most taking winning debut at Sandown. Didn't come up to expectations in Group 3 at Ascot after but remains capable of better now at 1¼m.

Measuring Time won over 7f first 2 starts. Good efforts in defeat since, just behind reopposing stablemate Auld Burns over this trip at Newmarket last time. Stiffer track may see him reverse that form.

Specific Gravity won maiden at Nottingham last autumn and stepped up good deal on that form when fourth to Dordogne in listed race at Newmarket on reappearance. Still looked green then and will stay at least 1¼m.

Timeform 1-2-3
1. Dordogne
2. Measuring Time
3. Auld Burns

Timeform's View: A well-contested renewal. Dordogne will be suited by the slightly longer trip and is given the nod over the Hannon pair Measuring Time and Auld Burns.
