Can the Stewards' Cup winner Hoof It land the Nunthorpe?

"Hoof It put up one of the handicap performances of all time at Goodwood, and he can take the drop to 5f in his stride on his first attempt at the highest level..."

This year's Nunthorpe Stakes looks a very open renewal. Timeform give a runner-by-runner guide to the race...

Bated Breath made excellent progress in 2010 and better still this year, winning twice and going close in July Cup on latest outing. All runs have come at 6f, but likely to be just as effective at this trip.

Captain Dunne is a speedball who prefaced win in 'Dash' Handicap at Epsom last time out (had cheekpieces refitted) with a narrow second in Group 3 in France. Never better, but needs another leap forward here.

Hamish Mcgonagall is a tough sprinter who loves it here and has been performing with credit in pattern company of late, beaten narrowly into third by Masamah over C&D last month. This looks a bridge too far, though.

Hoof It has been hugely progressive this year, proving himself a top sprinter with a monstrous performance in the Stewards Cup last time. Drops back in trip, but should cope with that, and the one to beat here.

Inxile is currently enjoying most prolific season yet, mopping up 4 listed contests in Ireland as well as a Group 3 at Longchamp. Had Sole Power behind at Tipperary last time, but out of his comfort zone now.

Kingsgate Native is a top-notch sprinter on his day, winning this contest as a 2-y-o in 2007. Ran well when second in Temple Stakes on return, but below form since, including tried in headgear, and best left alone now.

Masamah is a speedy sort who was better than ever when landing C&D listed race last month, and took form to a new level when blitzing rivals from front in King George Stakes at Goodwood. Can't be dismissed.

Prohibit is a hold-up performer who was third to Sole Power in Temple Stakes in May and just behind Wizz Kid in French Group 2 before career best to win King's Stand at Ascot. Strong pace will suit.

Sole Power - NR

Tiddliwinks ran above himself when placed in Duke of York and Greenlands Stakes in May, and belatedly broke his duck on turf when winning minor event at Nottingham last time. Looks outclassed here.

Breathless Kiss put up a career-best performance to win at Beverley on turf return. Not disgraced when mid-field in Palace House Stakes in April, but had limitations exposed since, and no appeal here.

Invincible Ash is a smart and fairly consistent sprinter who won Group 3 at the Curragh in June. Third to Inxile at Tipperary last time, and that leaves her with plenty to find, while usual tongue tie is left off.

Piccadilly Filly ran race of her life when third to Sole Power in this contest last season, and back to some form in headgear of late, fifth in listed company at Deauville last time. Tongue tied for first time.

Swiss Diva won listed race and 2 Group 3s in France last year. Well held in King's Stand on first run for 8 months and even a return to her best wouldn't be enough to win in this company.

Margot Did is a strong-travelling filly who had best of draw when an impressive winner of listed Scurry Stakes at Sandown in June. Parked wide when only fourth over same C&D last time, but much more required now.

Wizz Kid is a lightly raced filly who improved for drop to 5f to win Prix du Gros-Chene (by a head from Prohibit) at Chantilly in June. That form franked handsomely by second since, and she's not taken lightly.

Requinto was successful on all 3 starts over 5f, latest when overcoming troubled passage to beat Burwaaz in Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood. Gets stacks of weight from his elders, and one to consider.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Hoof It
2. Bated Breath
3. Wizz Kid

Timeform View: Hoof It put up one of the handicap performances of all time at Goodwood, and he can take the drop to 5f in his stride on his first attempt at the highest level. Bated Breath is much respected, while the French filly Wizz Kid is unexposed and needs keeping on side.
