"Camps Bay starts life for David Nicholls on a very workable mark and has won on his reappearance in the past."

We're nearing the halfway point for April now and still yet to get a placepot up this month, but that's partly down to us chasing some of the cards that promise big payouts. Pontefract's first meeting of the new Flat season, which we're going to have a crack at today, also falls under that category.

2:20 - A frenetic pace is on the cards in the first, so it's probably best to avoid those that will be sat close to it. Mey Blossom and Hits Only Jude strike as the pick of the hold-up performers, the latter having a good record around this time of year.

2:50 - Henry Cecil had a three-year-old winner yesterday and there's every chance Moose Moran will improve a bundle on his debut effort in quite a strong Lingfield maiden in October. However, he has a bit to find in form terms with John Gosden's Zuider Zee, who made an equally promising start when runner-up at the same course last month, and possesses a fitness advantage on his nearest market rival. It would be disappointing were Zuider Zee not to make the first three but it's still worth a bit of insurance and Forsyth is open to above-average improvement on the back of his initial experience at Wolverhampton.

3:20 - The first of two very competitive handicaps but this looks a bit simpler than the mile-and-a-quarter event, with Kiwi Bay and Fastnet Storm both standing out as very solid. A reproduction of his fifth (first home far side) to Irish Heartbeat in the Spring Mile would see the former go very close, whilst Fastnet Storm has been successful on both previous visits to the track.

3:50 - This may turn out trappy but there's no reason to believe Bold Adventure and Smarties Party won't convert their good recent all-weather form over to turf so at least one of them should make the first two.

4:20 - Albaqaa did shape as if ahead of his mark at Wolverhampton a couple of starts ago and a return to this trip is sure to benefit, but such popularity in the betting makes him opposable for placepot purposes, especially with so many interesting runners elsewhere. Classic Vintage, who boasts some strong form from 2009, looks all set to run a big race on his reappearance, his stable being right at the top of their game and this drop back in trip not likely to pose any problems. A former stablemate of Classic Vintage, Camps Bay starts life for David Nicholls on a very workable mark and has won on his reappearance in the past, as has Unbreak My Heart (at this track in 2009), so they get the second and third spots.

4:50 - It's probably worth playing it safe in the last with Picnic Party, the pick on form. However, Richard Fahey's newcomer Fairy Shoes has an eye-catching sprint pedigree so she's worth including too.
