Jim Bolger: Trainer of Macnas
"Macnas lost her way somewhat after a promising debut effort last year but her trainer is adept at get the best out of similar types and she looks well treated on her handicap debut"
Timeform's Billy Nash gives you four recommendations for racing in Ireland on Sunday...
Gowran 2:45 - Win Back - Macnas
Macnas lost her way somewhat after a promising debut effort last year but her trainer is adept at get the best out of similar types and she looks well treated on her handicap debut. She had a couple of subsequent winners (including Black Quartz) behind when third to Alshahbaa at the Curragh on debut last year but things didn't really go her way after that. She shaped as if in need of the run on her next start, 4 months later, at Listowel, and was then badly hampered when making ground at Naas. She is bred to stay this trip and should be able to avoid trouble from her wide draw.
Navan 3:35 - Win Back - Airspace
Airspace was turned over at short odds in a handicap at Dundalk on his return but he did little wrong on that occasion and is worth another try. He has done well since dropped to sprint trips, finishing in the frame on all 4 starts at 5f/6f, and it seems significant that Johnny Murtagh again takes the ride. This race can quickly be narrowed down to just a few realistic contenders and Airspace's experience should stand to him.
Gowran 4:30 - Place Lay - Copper Dock
Copper Dock was better than ever in 2009, winning a pair of handicaps at Dundalk at the back end of the season, but it is hard to make a case for him here. All his best recent form is on polytrack (only win on turf came over 3 years ago), this is his first try at further than 7f, he is poorly drawn and has to defy a career-high mark. He simply has to be opposed and will be doing really well to even get placed in a race as competitive as this.
Navan 5:40 - Win Lay - His Way
His Way showed his first form when chasing home Emrani at Dundalk last time but very much enjoyed the run of the race that day and wouldn't be certain to confirm that form with Kristal Komet, whom he meets on 3 lb worse terms now. He hadn't shown a great deal in 3 maiden starts prior to that and looks worth taking on in a race full of similarly unexposed types.
