Southwell suits some, but not all
"Shawkantango should be banned from the Polytrack, The Fibresand is for him. He has run over the minimum trip there seven times and won four."
Or should that be Suthell? However you pronounce it, the action is still the same and Neil Munro loves it. Here are four to watch on the all-weather at the Nottinghamshire track
I say potato, you say PO-ta-TO. I say tomato, you say TO-ma-TO. But when it comes to Southwell, it is not SOUTHwell, it is SUTHELL and I will call the whole thing off! It really does annoy me when commentators call it SOUTHwell. I don't know why, but it does.
I am not even saying I am correct but Southwell it is for me and there is no better place to trade in-running. So let us look at some super Southwell sand selections.
Fluctuation
Well that is what you want from the odds when you are a trader. A little bit of Fluctuation in the right direction is perfect and that is what Ian Williams' four-year-old does on the Betfair markets during the race.
The son of Street Cry took 15 runs to get off the mark but had already proved that his love for the Fibresand with some decent performances. He has now won his last two runs at Southwell but the trading angle for me is that, even in victory, he displays a proclivity towards throwing races away. Be sure to take out in-play insurance as he climbs up the handicap.
Advice: At Southwell back at BSP and then lay out your stake at one quarter your matched price with further offers at deep odds-on.
Shawkantango
I can promise you that Mrs In-Running knows that I can NOT tango and should never attempt to. In fact I should be banned from the dance floor and Shawkantango should be banned from the Polytrack, The Fibresand is for him. He has run over the minimum trip there seven times and won four. On three of those four occasions he has traded significantly bigger in the run as he can get outpaced and has to work hard to get his head in front, but he keeps trying.
Advice: At Southwell back half your stake at BSP and the other half in the run at double BSP.
The Lock Master
The 5yo gelding has a really cracking record on the Fibresand... in the place market. He has won once in ten runs at Southwell, but been placed in the other nine runs. That includes five odds-on trades, one at [1.01]. Now, if you watch the replay of that [1.01] defeat you will still think The Lock Master won, but somehow he lost it on the nod. He does travel well but doesn't always find as much as you would expect. A bit late now but he has a cracking record in January.
Advice: At Southwell back at BSP and then lay out your stake at one quarter your matched price with further offers at deep odds-on.
Mottley Crewe
Let us keep this simple. Mottley Crewe has run over six furlongs on the Fibresand twice, and won both times. He has run over the minimum trip at the same venue four times, and finished a close second every time with three low odds-on trades, [1.18]; [1.25]; [1.35]. He travels well, up with the pace and catches the in-running backers eyes.
Advice: At Southwell over five and six furlongs over back at BSP and then lay out your stake at one quarter your matched price. Over five furlongs lay out further offers at deep odds-on.
