The cold is finally here
"The really interesting in-running angle for Transact is the fact that he has traded bigger in the run on all three victory occasions."
The weather may have played havoc with the racing calendar but Neil Munro has still been able to make some shrewd in-running observations...
It took a long time to come but the snow finally arrived this last week, just as we headed in to February and our minds started to wander to thoughts of spring and Cheltenham. But the authorities did their best so we managed to keep racing going on most days and here were some weather beaters that you should keep an eye on in the weeks and months to come.
Transact
Martin Todhunter's seven-year-old picked up his third career win at Newcastle recently, and he definitely has become a course specialist. The only time he has tasted defeat at the north east course is when a close second and that day he traded at deep odds-on. But for me the really interesting in-running angle for Transact is the fact that he has traded bigger in the run on all three victory occasions. Odds of [120.0] ([11.50] BSP); [27.0] ([12.62]) and [17.5] ([6.10]) are the bare facts. He's outpaced at times but then does his best work late on when he keeps finding.
At Newcastle back pre-race at BSP for half your stake; then in-running at double the BSP for the other half of your stake. Then lay out double your stake at deep odds-on.
Focail Maith
I must thank my colleague Gareth for pointing out this horse prior to his run last wee. He will be pleased to see that I have now added this low trader to my database. The four-year-old gelding has six odds-on trades to his name and also has traded at half his BSP in over 50% of his defeats, mainly due to the fact that he is a strong traveller. Focail Maith seems to enjoy trips around nine to 11 furlongs at this point in his career.
Over 1m1f to 1m3f back at BSP and then lay out your stake at half the BSP followed by a further lay offer at odds-on.
Bookiesindex Boy
Just a quick mention for John Jenkins eight-year-old, which appeared in the same race as a horse I put up last week, Shawkantango. Bookiesindex Boy yet again travelled so well on the bridle but found nothing off of it. But the market knows it and you cannot play on him.
No play.
Mediterranean Sea
Talking of John Jenkins, he tasted victory in the very next race with the six-year-old mare. Mediterranean Sea went 18 months without a victory but has now won three times back to back and all of those have come at Southwell. That means four victories on the Fibresand in 11 starts and plenty of close placed efforts as well. He will now be running off a mark in the mid-70's and it may be worth noting that he has traded half his BSP 52% of the time in defeat in case that mark proved beyond him.
At Southwell between 1m3f and 1m6f back at BSP and lay out your stake at half BSP in the run for his next few runs.
