We expect to see a similar 'cavalry charge' in today's Stewards' Cup
"The Richard Hannon bandwagon has rolled on through Goodwood, winning just about every two-year-old race here this week, and the Betfair market tells us that newcomer Pausanias is expected to keep the run going in the maiden. Who are we to argue?"
It has been a glorious week, certainly for Messrs Hannon and Hughes, and they are charged with getting us through the last two legs today, but it will obviously be the Stewards' Cup that makes or breaks the placepot.
1.55 - A difficult first leg to negotiate, and we're going against Wadnaan and Rock N Roll Ransom purely on experience grounds, as this will be a demanding race. Top-weight Averroes has looked potentially better than a handicapper at times, and he has the bonus of leading claimer John Fahy up. In addition, we're on side with Finest Reserve, who has been crying out for a step up in trip, and Dromore from his lower turf mark.
2.30 - A tightly-knit listed race, but Desert Myth is the one with all the potential, and this drop back in trip could be the making of him. Conversely, Treadwell is going up in distance, but promises to stay, at least round here, and he brings strong handicap form to the table, Himalya for one having franked his Royal Ascot win.
3.05 - Last year's winner Midday is again the talking horse, but French-raider Stacelita's form is every bit as good, and she warmed up for this with a smooth win in a Group 3 at Longchamp last month. She's worth banking on, mindful that we need to save lines for the next race...
3.40 - I don't like the term 'cavalry charge', but the Stewards' Cup invariably is one. On the evidence of yesterday's consolation race, there's no track bias, as the principals merged down the middle for the finish. With that in mind, we'll just select the horses we fancy most, rather than get bogged down in the 'two on each side' approach, so it's (in racecard order) Jimmy Styles, Rileyskeepingfaith, Enact and Noverre To Go.
4.15 - The Richard Hannon bandwagon has rolled on through Goodwood, winning just about every two-year-old race here this week, and the Betfair market tells us that newcomer Pausanias is expected to keep the run going in the seven-furlong maiden. Who are we to argue?
4.50 - It's that man again in the nursery, Hannon running two but Eucharist the one to concentrate on, Timeform top-rated. Bahamian Sunset is another one who's well handicapped according to our ratings, and she's also the choice of Hanagan over three-time winner Majestic Myles, so she gets the nod as second choice.
