The going is not necessarily against Delegator today, says Carl Harris, and at [4.2] Brian Meehan's colt is a great bet...

The race of the day is undoubtedly the Irish 2000 Guineas (3.45) at The Curragh which will, sadly, be run on very soft ground. I say sadly because the going could spoil a fantastic contest and indeed has already played a part in the Betfair market.

Despite having beaten Mastercraftsman at Newmarket, Delegator is second favourite to Aidan O'Brien's colt who has winning form on the heavy Curragh ground as a two-year-old. Delegator has only ever raced on good or faster going which does not actually mean that he will not handle it. Prior to the Newmarket Guineas connections insisted the ground was too fast for Brian Meehan's charge and that they would prefer a bit of juice. They certainly have juice in abundance for this race!

The owner/breeder of Delegator believes the colt will handle the ground and I have to say that I agree with her. Certainly if he does then he will win. I think the Newmarket form will prove to be of exceptional quality and I am firmly of the opinion that Delegator is a high class miler and will show his class by winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Delegator is the value in the race and I will be having a substantial investment today.

The best race of the day, in the UK, is the Temple Stakes at Haydock (3.10). Robin Bastiman must have punched the air in delight when Amour Propre was withdrawn. The race now looks to be between Borderlescott and Tax Free. Bastiman will welcome the conditions and has said that his Nunthorpe winner will have come on for his seasonal debut in the Palace House Stakes. Tax Free will go off quickly as he did at York before getting pegged back to finish third and I am of the opinion that the same fate will befall Dandy Nicholls' horse again today. Borderlescott will relish the conditions and I strongly fancy him to win the Temple Stakes.

The other interesting race of the day is the King Charles II Stakes (2.50) at Newmarket where Donativum is the class act on show. Last seen winning The Breeders Cup for John Gosden he now runs in the Godolphin colours. Surely he must win, but I am wary of getting stuck in. I suggest that the Betfair market will be your best guide to this race and I will only take an interest if there is a market move for Dettori's mount.

Todays Bets...
3.10 Haydock - Borderlescott- Win @ [3.5]
3.45 Curragh - Delegator - Win @ [4.2] (Bet of the Day)
