York is not going to plan and was it not for Kayf Aramis, who was the talk of the Knavesmire, Carl Harris would be in a deep hole. So Friday is make or break - can our man finish with a flourish?

The race of the day is The Yorkshire Cup (2.40) which Geordieland managed to win by a short margin last year. He is back again and attempts to retain his trophy, but I gave up backing Geordieland some time ago. Geordieland is always one to Lay in running. He travels so well on the bridle but rarely finds enough and this race is a much better renewal than last year. I will put in a lay at [1.5] in running and hope that it gets matched

The class horse in the race is Ask who was sixth to Zarkava in The Arc, he will stay the trip and clearly he is the one they all have to beat. I have taken the early [3.55] about Ask who should really have too much class and should be the answer to the Yorkshire Cup puzzle. The Stoute stable continues to be in good form, as I witnessed to my cost yesterday.

The horse that I have waited for all week runs in the last race (4.55) of the meeting, Gilded Age, from the Mark Johnston yard. The stable have had seven runners at the meeting, all unplaced, but Gilded Age could rectify that situation. He trotted up in his maiden at Newcastle earning him a mark of 76 which I am sure will prove to be very lenient. The handicapper, who rarely gives anything away, may have given Gilded Age a very big chance on his handicap debut and is well worth backing both win and place. I am very confident that this is a very winnable handicap off a mark of 76.
