Having been in fine form yesterday, Carl turns his attentions to Chester and Bath today...
Sprint King Dandy Can Land The Stayers Chester Cup
6th May
It was another good day yesterday with both bets winning very nicely, making it five in a row and a nice way to kick off Chester's excellent three day meeting.
The feature race today is the Chester Cup, a staying Handicap over 2m 2f worth almost £75k to the winner. Dandy Nicholls is more commonly associated with sprinters but looks to have diversified into the staying division with the 120,000 Guineas acquisition of Hindu Kush (2.45). He was previously trained by Aiden O'Brien and finished last season with a fourth place in the St Leger and signed off his Ballydoyle career with a fifth place in a Longchamp Group 2.
Nicholls took him back to Ireland for his latest outing where he finished second in the Listed Vintage Crop Stakes, the race in which Yeats disappointed.
Jim Crowley won The Chester Cup last year on Bulwark, a 33/1 shot no less, and knows what it takes to win this race. In a race where many will not get the trip Hindu Kush may have the class and Jim Crowley the guile to land this valuable prize . Hindu Cush is a massive looking [14.5] to win (at the time of writing) and [3.5] to place which I think represents a great each-way bet!
The Lilly Agnes(1.45) is always an Interesting race and features the leading two year-old, in terms of wins, so far this season, Star Rover. He lumped 9st 12lb round Thirsk last time to win a weak 5 runner affair and as a result of his prolific streak he has to carry 9st 6lb and give weight to all of his rivals today which I think will anchor David Evans' speedy colt. This is one I want to take on and have Laid Star Rover at the early price of [4.8].
Bet of the Day..
Desperate Dan (3.05) is a consistent performer in selling and claiming grade and is back on turf, stepping up to 6f, for a moderate looking Bath seller. Rated by the handicapper as the best horse in the race, I think he will have too much speed for this field on the blisteringly quick ground. Andy Haynes has opted for a 7 pound apprentice which makes him the clear choice at the weights and at 3.6 I am prepared to take a chance on him today. A few eye-brows may be raised about relying on Desperate Dan but this is a poor race and it will certainly be desperate if he can not beat this bunch!
Today's Bets
2.45 Chester - Hindu Kush (Win and Place)
1.45 Chester - Star Rover (Lay in Win Market)
Bet of the Day
3.05 Bath - Desperate Dan (Win).
