The last couple of days have been difficult but today it all changes as York gets underway with a fabulous day of racing, writes Carl Harris.
Hats Off at York on Wednesday...
13th May
The two big races of the day are The Musidora Stakes (2.40) and The Duke Of York Stakes (3.10) - very different but both very good betting events. I will be at York for all three days and looking at the entries I will be enjoying some good racing and a hopefully coming home in profit.
Considering the fact that The Musidora Stakes had to be reopened we are lucky to have a field of six runners, although once again a no hoper is allowed to take part, so there are only five in with a chance. The first prices I saw for this race made High Heeled favourite which surprised me considering the form of The Royal runner Enticement. The Betfair market has made Sir Michael Stoute's filly the favourite and rightly so. High Heeled won a conditions event at Newbury on her seasonal return last month, which was a good performance but was in receipt of 5lbs from all her rivals. Enticement's Listed win at Newmarket last season is by far the best form on offer and Sir Michael Stoute would not run her in this company if she had not trained on.
Reports from the gallops are very positive and the Stoute stable could hardly be in better form with strike rates of 30% for the season and 42%, 10 winners from 24 runners, in the last 14 days. Ryan Moore takes the ride in the Royal Silks and I will be backing Enticement to be a Royal Winner on the Knavesmire. Enticement is my bet of the day.
The Duke of York reads like a who's who of Sprinting with 16 runners contesting this £100k Group 2 6f event. The ground is very fast and I would love to get odds about a new course record being set. The margins between these sprinters are small, but it pays to follow a sprinter in form and one that excels on firm going. Tax Free fits the bill and started 2009 where he left off last season, completing a hat trick of wins in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket. He had Equiano and Knot in Wood behind who re-oppose today on identical terms and similar going. The market has made Equiano favourite but I prefer Tax Free who has blistering speed and looks a rock soild each way bet. I cannot end without a pun about Tax Free winnings, so lets just hope that we have plenty of Tax Free Winnings to enjoy today!
I hope that by the last race I am nicely in profit. I really like Topolski (4.55) for Mark Johnston. He has started his three-year-old career with two wins and absolutely bolted up at Beverley. The handicapper has put him up 8lbs but I think there is more to come and at a similar price to Tax Free I think represents a very good each way bet in a 20 runner handicap.
