Two racing bets on a big day of sport...
I have a big decision to make tonight, do I watch the Champions League final or attend the big night at Beverley, my local track? This is a very tough decision, but I will be backing Man Utd to win and a horse I strongly fancy at Beverley, of that there is no question.
The Hillary Needler Trophy is an important race for two year-old fillies which has once again attracted a big field. The draw bias at Beverley is more pronounced than at any other track in the country with a low draw being a significant inconvenience over five furlongs. Sixteen runners remain in the race, from 17 originally entered but one that stands out on her one and only racecourse appearance is Don't Tell Mary (7.20) who won in eye-catching style at Bath, on a firm surface. Tonight will see similar underfoot conditions and crucially Tom Dascombe's filly is drawn 12 of 16.
Dascombe has established himself as a very capable trainer in a relatively short space of time. He is clearly capable with juveniles and boasts a 38% strike rate this season with his two-year-olds. Having such a strong hand it is significant that Don't Tell Mary is immediately stepped up to Listed company following her maiden win. The market certainly supports the view that she is a smart filly and looks the one to side with over the flying five furlongs tonight at Beverley.
Away from tonight's action the good thing of the day, in my book, is Aromatic (3.35) at Lingfield. She looks another talented filly to follow, certainly from a mark of 78. She made her debut in a very hot Newmarket maiden last year, finishing fifth then fulfilled the promise shown by winning a Salisbury a couple of weeks ago. John Gosden has her entered in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot for which she will need to be a lot better than a 78 rated handicapper. She is certainly bred to be and her trainer knows how to bring on a filly. I would suggest that she is very well handicapped for her debut in this sphere.
Wednesdays Bets...
3.35 Lingfield - Aromatic - Win @ [1.92]
7.20 Beverley - Don't Tell Mary - Win @ [3.35]
