Carl Harris is backing the Lockinge Stakes' jolly to prove the doubters wrong...
His trainer says there will be no excuses, so lets hope that Paco Boy delivers in the Lockinge Stakes (2.40) today. He won at Sandown over a mile, very cosily, dispelling the myth that he doesn't stay the mile but there are still doubts about the trip in some quarters.
Writing on his website Richard Hannon says: "I couldn´t be happier with him. He gets the mile no problem, but people who claims that this is a soft Group 1 are talking nonsense. There is no such thing as a gimme when you are playing at this level, but he goes into the race at the top of his game and there will be no excuses."
Paco Boy is by far the best horse in the race and should really win this race comfortably, the official handicapper rates Paco Boy 9lb's ahead of the rest of the field which illustrates the task facing his 11 rivals. Of course there are no easy Group 1 races but Paco Boy looks rock solid. He drifted at Sandown, but won easily. I do hope he drifts again!
I did not get my chance to lay Geordieland (2.05) yesterday who missed York due to rain and now runs in the Listed Aon Stakes. Although on paper he is the best horse in the race I will be laying him in-running at a short price. He will no doubt come travelling like the winner, as usual, but it is a good bet that he will not find anything.
Aqwaal (3.10) is very progressive and has won his last two races. He was raised 9lb's in the handicap for an eye catching win at Sandown but is clearly highly thought of by connections. They have Aqwaal entered in The King Edward VII stakes which would indicate they think he is much better than his current mark of 85 . I really like this one and will be backing him to win at around [4.8] to win. A repeat of the turn of foot he displayed last time will leave the field well behind.
