Plumpton Races.
"Ministry is on a fair mark judged on his Flat form and appeals strongly as the sort to do better in handicaps having caught the eye on two of his three outings in juvenile hurdles."
Plumpton is the venue for today's placepot...
13:10 - Virtually the entire pool will be riding on Montbazon in the opener, and with good reason as only injury or a fall can possibly prevent him winning. He's a blindingly obvious banker.
13:40 - The fact that the ungenuine, long-standing maiden Knock Boy is [2.24] tells you all you need to know about the quality of the second leg. Fortunately, a non-runner means it's now a four-runner affair, so the best course of action is to stick them all in and start thinking about the next.
14:10 - Aikideau is the obvious form horse in the third and there's not much reason to think he won't be thereabouts under his penalty. The Henderson debutant Firey King is a surprisingly big price (currently [5.6]) considering he cost £115,000 after winning his point. He had a couple of subsequent winners under Rules behind him on that occasion, and if he's ready to do himself justice he should go very close, despite what the market might suggest.
14:45 - Ballinhassing and Blue Lovell are closely matched on recent running at the track earlier in the month, with the latter just about weighted to reverse the form. That said, Ballinghassig has a likeable way of going about things for such a low-grade horse and gets the vote despite those slightly less favourable terms. Top weight Pete The Feat needs to be better than ever to win after a 3 lb rise for a good second at Folkestone last time, but the way he went through that race suggests there might still be a bit of improvement in him, so he goes in as well.
15:15 - Storm Survivor probably isn't straightforward, tending to go in snatches on his last two starts, but at the same time he's improving and today's step up in trip/first-time visor should both be in his favour. In truth, there isn't much to get excited about among his rivals, so he's the day's second banker.
15:50 - Ministry is on a fair mark judged on his Flat form and appeals strongly as the sort to do better in handicaps having caught the eye on two of his three outings in juvenile hurdles. He makes the cut for the placepot along with Marju King, who has a course-and-distance win to his name and shaped a lot better than the bare result when mid-field in a handicap at Warwick last time.
