Aidan O'Brien is triple-handed in our opening leg.
"On the face of it, the finale looks like a wide-open handicap, but closer inspection reveals the bet of the day in Chris Wall’s Citrus Star, so we’ll adopt the unusual tactic of employing a last-leg banker"
The Cambridgeshire makes for one of the toughest placepots of the year, but this afternoon's supporting races give us the chance to save some lines...
14.05 - Only two places up for grabs in the opening Royal Lodge. The best of Aidan O'Brien's trio may well be Daddy Long Legs, who shaped as if in need of this trip when fourth in the Champagne Stakes the time before, while Farhaan, who has done little wrong to date and is worth a crack at this level, should also be included.
14.35 - We're at the stage of the season when it's time to take on the precocious sorts who have made hay during the summer and it's doubtful that Best Terms will be able to do on this stiffer track what she did in the Lowther, so Shumoos, who still looks to have a better performance in her, and Irish-raider Lightening Pearl are chosen against the favourite.
15.10 - This race last year saw Saphresa run out a comprehensive winner and there is no reason to think she can't go on to complete a hat-trick of Sun Chariots, having looked as good as ever this season.
15.50 - Unsurprisingly, a case can be made for plenty of these, but my four for the 2011 Cambridgeshire are: the consistent pair of Proponent and Prince of Johanne, Riggins (who will appreciate the return to firmer ground), and the less-exposed Maqaraat, who should go well for the in-form Charlie Hills.
16.25 - A competitive nursery for our fifth leg, but the two to concentrate on are class-dropper Pimpernel and Mark Johnston's Nimiety, both of whom are sure to appreciate the return to seven furlongs, with the latter in particular shaping last time as if she has plenty of scope from this opening mark.
17.00 - On the face of it, this finale looks like a wide-open handicap, but closer inspection reveals the bet of the day in Chris Wall's Citrus Star, so we'll adopt the unusual tactic of employing a last-leg banker. The selection is very well handicapped, has been working her way back this year and was much better than the result when carried wide at Doncaster last time.
