Carl Harris believes there are interesting winners to be backed at Newbury today...

Thursday starts our countdown to the weekend. On Saturday we have the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and The Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury - the meeting kicking off today.

I read with interest Paul Nicholls saying that he thought Denman would finish fourth at best, making the decision to run him off top weight, first time out, a very strange one. Who am I to argue with the Champion Trainer, but the market will be interesting, I will keep my powder dry on this one for the time being and see which way it goes.

As I said Newbury kicks off their Hennessy meeting on Thursday and there are jumps cards at Uttoxter and Taunton. Unless the all-weather is of a decent quality I have decided to ignore it and focus on jumps, which is paying off. The racing gets much better from Friday, but there are some interesting bets today. I will be focusing on Newbury and think there are winners to be backed at the Berkshire venue.

12:55 Newbury, Lady An Co - Win

I love backing four-year-olds with ability in novice chases off only 10 stones. Paul Nicholls has exploited the weight allowance time after time and here is another, with Harry Skelton taking a bonus three pounds off. Already rated 136 the others will have to go some to give her that much weight and win. If the layers take an opposing view we could get a decent price - lets hope so!

14:05 Newbury, Pettifour- Win

We may not get a generous price, but in terms of quality Pettifour is way ahead of this field. You may recall we backed the Twiston-Davies trained seven-year-old a couple of weeks ago when winning at Cheltenham. Rated 155 over hurdles he could be a high class chaser. If so this should be well within his compass. Best bet of the day.

15:15 Newbury, Get Me Out Of Here, Win

Regular readers will know that I rate Get Me Out Of Here as a very decent prospect, having put this one up every time it has been declared. Following wins in novice company the handicapper has awarded the O'Neil in-mate a mark of 123. I think this may be generous and we could be backing a well handicapped horse today. If McCoy was in the saddle we would see him heavily backed but as this is a Conditional Jockey's race he is not eligible to ride. R P Mclernon is a capable pilot and I think he will have an armchair ride here. I will be having a sizable wager on a horse I think could be very good.
