"With the absence of Age of Aquarius the path is clear for Monitor Closely to win the St Leger. I rate this as an exceptional bet at value odds."
Carl Harris has a bumper batch of bets for you from both sides of the Irish Sea this Saturday...
Its St Leger day in Ireland and in England. I have been going to St Leger, at Doncaster for 25 years, and I am not even 40 yet. It's a race that had lost much of its
credibility but in recent years it has enjoyed a renaissance. Certainly last year's winner Conduit was a worthy winner, triggering scenes of great joy with Dettori winning Sir Michael Stoute his first Leger. I fancy one very strongly this year.
Monitor Closely (3.00) readily put Father Time in his place at York and looks to be a stayer who will relish this step up in trip. I was impressed by that Great Voltigeur victory and with the absence of Age of Aquarius the path is clear for Monitor Closely to win the St Leger. The handicapper seems to share that view by awarding him a rating of 117 with, in my view, more to come. I rate this as an exceptional bet at value odds.
At Goodwood, Mac Love (2.40) is a different horse since joining Stef Liddiard and ran with credit behind Delegator in a much better race last time. A drop in grade will see Mac Love able to be much more competitive and register another big win for Micky Fenton aboard. I always like to see a 'smaller stable' do well, especially when I have money on their big wins.
At the Curragh, Yeats (3.20) is the best stayer, ever and whatever happens here he provided one of the highlights of the season when landing a Gold Cup four timer at Royal Ascot. Even at the age of eight he is a top class group one performer and ideally probably wants further but can show his class to win the Irish St Leger at The Curragh on Saturday.
After backing Geordieland on Friday I have concluded that I have totally lost my marbles as today I will be on JJ The Jet Plane (4.20). He is now in the care of Richard Hannon and they seem to have realised that perhaps a crack at a listed contest is more his level. He has certainly gone to the right trainer who will get the very best out of him and they have booked Ryan Moore to take the ride, which is a positive move. Given the opposition JJ should really win this otherwise it will be back to the drawing board.
Carl Harris' Best Bets for Saturday September 12
• 2.40 Goodwood- Mac Love, Win
• 3.00 Doncaster- Monitor Closely, Win (NAP)
• 3.20 Curragh- Yeats, Win
• 4.20 Goodwood- JJ The Jet Plane, Win
