Carl Harris is looking to a potential pattern horse to bring home a winner today

The weekend's events were really shocking and took the shine off Sea the Stars' wonderful win in the Irish Champion Stakes. Sometimes things happen that put's your betting fortunes in to context, certainly what happened in Malton has done just that.

It's a new week though and we kick off with a couple of bets on the Flat, at Folkestone and Newcastle. Hopefully we will start the week with a nice profit, though the action could be described as 'bread and butter' stuff.

I put Art Scholar (2.20) in my notebook last time out at Bath, after seeing him bolt home after halving in price. This is clearly a nice horse but I think he could be very good. It is interesting that Gary Moore is running him in novice company only ten days after his debut. I expect Art Scholar to win here before going on to pattern races and I rate the two year-old as the best bet of the day.

Alsmeer (2.30) already has black type to her name and may represent some value. She was beaten last time at odds on, in a maiden, but that was in fact by a nice horse of Richard Hannon's who has run at a high level since. She should be too goo for these today, certainly you would expect her to land maiden at the fourth time of asking and I thought she would be shorter than the early exchange price.
