"Twenty-seven runners are set to line up for the valuable six-furlong handicap, with the Dandy Nicholls-trained three-year-old Victoire De Lyphar currently leading the market at 7.8"
The spotlight turns to Ayr on Saturday, with an excellent renewal of the Ayr Gold Cup very much taking centre stage. Twenty-seven runners are set to line up for the valuable six-furlong handicap, with the Dandy Nicholls-trained three-year-old Victoire De Lyphar currently leading the market at 7.8. Strong claims can be made for a host of other contenders, in what promises to be a thrilling race. The undercard at Ayr features the consolation for the main event, the Silver Cup, in which Definightly is likely to be a warm order having been transformed by blinkers lately. Roger Charlton's gelding is well in at the weights after two impressive victories at Goodwood. Ayr also hosts the Group 3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes, which features some promising juvenile fillies, arguably headed by Rimth, who was narrowly defeated in a listed event at Salisbury on her latest outing.
There is a good card at Newbury on Saturday, with the valuable Dubai Duty Free handicap and the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes the feature events. Progressive three-year-old Senate is the likely favourite in the former event as he seeks a hat-trick of handicap wins, but he will face stern opposition from the likes of Royal Destination, who, like Senate, produced a career best effort when winning at Doncaster's St Leger meeting on his latest start. The Mill Reef looks quite an open race despite a relatively small field, with Libranno, Temple Meads and Crown Prosecutor all likely to have their supporters. There is also a 5f Group 3 at Newbury, the market for which will most likely be headed by Astrophysical Jet. This speedy daughter of Dubawi has gone from strength to strength this term, and is sure to be popular on the back of her success in the Flying Five at the Curragh last month.
