Former champion jockey Pat Eddery is making good progress as a trainer
Timeform looks at three yards enjoying a fruitful summer...
"Tournedos won off a mark of 96 in 2008, and though he is highly unlikely to reach that level again, his Beverley performance, on the back a narrow defeat at Hamilton, showed that he has been rejuvenated by Carr after an indifferent season in 2009"
Richard Hannon is having a superb year with his stable stars, and Dick Turpin added to the yard's tally last Sunday in France with an emphatic win in the Prix Jean Prat, yet the recent form of the yard in general is also worthy of note. With 15 winners in the last fortnight (as of Wednesday), Hannon is in superb form and the yard is again proving prolific with its two-year-olds, with 10 of those 15 wins registered by juveniles. Chief among them is Memory, who added to her Albany success with another group race victory in the Cherry Hinton Stakes. She won comfortably at Newmarket showing a potent turn of foot, and will be hard to beat when stepped up to Group 1 level for the Moyglare Stud Stakes in August, with the seven furlong trip likely to be no problem for her. Among the plethora of Hannon's recent maiden winners is Admirable Spirit, who showed plenty of promise when winning at Newbury and, despite her lack of big-race-entries, it will be no surprise if she makes her mark in Group races, having won comfortably despite showing greenness.
Pat Eddery is beginning to make a real impact as a trainer and with the yard's win tally for the season now standing at 18, 2010 is sure to be his best season yet. Three-year-olds Desert Recluse and Captain John Nixon have made rapid improvement in handicaps for Eddery, with the latter racking up four races in June. His mark has risen substantially as a consequence, but given his progressive profile there is every chance that Captain John Nixon will take the enforced step up in class in his stride, and he remains one to follow.
On the Northern circuit, Ruth Carr has been in impressive form. Recent winner Tournedos won off a mark of 96 in 2008, and though he is highly unlikely to reach that level again, his Beverley performance, on the back a narrow defeat at Hamilton, showed that he has been rejuvenated by Carr after an indifferent season in 2009. The eight-year-old won with plenty in hand, and will have every chance of following up off a mark of 60. The yard has been among the winners frequently in recent weeks, and is definitely worth following.
