One of the features of Wetherby's Christmas meeting, the three-mile-one-furlong Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase is a popular betting contest that sees some of the best three-mile handicap chasers going head-to-head, normally on testing ground.
Wetherby is a galloping track with a gradual uphill run in the home straight making stamina very much an asset on soft ground. Although the track generally has a good record for those betting on the favourite, the 'Rowland Meyrick' has proved a tough race for the betting public in recent years, with no winner returning at odds of less than 8/1 since Behrajan scored at odds of 5/2 in 2001.
Trainer Ferdy Murphy seems to target this race with his better staying chasers and has twice been on the mark in the last three years, Leading Man at odds of 9/1 and classy Truckers Tavern at odds of 8/1 landing the prize for the Middleham handler. In the event of a particularly impressive performance in the race there could be a shake-up of odds in the ante-post betting lists for the Grand National and even the Gold Cup.
