Run at Wetherby's early-February fixture, the three-mile, Grade 2 Towton Novices' Chase, attracts classy performers with their eyes on the Cheltenham Festival and nearly always proves to be a hot betting race, with implications for the ante-post betting market for the Royal & Sun Alliance Chase and other major novice events in the spring.
This is a good race for punters that like to bet at odds-on, the last three such horses having all obliged easily, namely Halcon Generlardais, Ollie Magern and Keen Leader.
Wetherby's galloping circuit, testing fences and uphill run to the finish from the fourth last, make this a really solid test of an aspiring top-class novice chaser, and the roster of winners indicates that this is a race for the betting public to monitor carefully.
Only Heltornic's 2007 success at odds of 14/1 surprised the betting fraternity, the race generally falling to the first or second favourite in the betting list.
