A gruelling Grade 3 event run at Sandown's early-February fixture over a distance of two-miles-six-furlongs, the Tote Scoop6 Handicap Hurdle is always a hot betting heat that has punters stepping in and supporting a number of the fancied runners, normally with serious bets.
Surprisingly for such a competitive race, recent winners have all been very much to the fore on the betting list, and in the last five years no horse at odds longer than 11/2 has prevailed. Three of the last five favourites have landed the bets placed on them.
The great Baracouda contested this race in 2004, and came home comfortably giving away masses of weight to justify some substantial bets at odds of 8/15. But most winners are no more than good handicappers and races like the Coral Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival are the most likely subsequent target for horses that run well in this race, so the ante-post odds betting lists can be affected.
