A race with a rich tradition of providing significant pointers to the major staying handicaps and graded chases later in the season, Haydock's three-mile Tommy Whittle Chase is always a fascinating betting heat that attracts plenty of bets and can impact on ante-post odds betting markets.
Run at the Lancashire track in mid-December, there have been four winning favourites at short odds (two odds-on) in the last 10 years, two of them trained by Jonjo O'Neill, who has a sound record in the race, his recent winners Legal Right and Keen Leader both going on to become leading contenders for that season's Gold Cup.
In the last four or five years the event has been more of a Grand National trial, the winner often attracting serious betting interest in the ante-post odds market for the Aintree event, so those punters looking for a long-range interest in the 'National' might be best advised to take their chance before the Tommy Whittle if they want to find the value.
