In 2006 Haydock Park racecourse introduced The Last Fling Chase to its December programme to remember the popular staying chaser, trained by Sue Smith, who won a stack of races at the track and who became the darling of the betting public winning many races there at decent odds.
The three-mile chase produced an appropriate first winner as Sue Smith sent out Sharp Belline, relatively unconsidered in the betting at odds of 11/1, to beat The Outlier by two lengths in very heavy ground.
Haydock's galloping circuit and tricky fences make a three-mile winter staying chase there a real test of stamina and jumping, and the race is sure to establish itself as a trial for the Grand National and have some impact on the ante-post betting odds lists for the great Aintree event.
The ability to stay well in excess of three miles and to handle the inevitably deep ground at Haydock in December, is surely a prerequisite when considering a bet on any runner for the race, regardless of the odds on offer.
