Named after the great chaser who won the King George VI Chase at Kempton three times in the 1980's, the Grade 2 Wayward Lad Novices' Chase is a two mile novices' event that often attracts only a handful of runners but which is regularly a hot betting heat.

The race has been dominated by trainer Nicky Henderson who has won four of the last five runnings and has made the race very much his own. The public have latched onto Henderson targeting this event, and his runners often carry plenty of bets and are the subject of strong betting support, regardless of the odds on offer. Jockey Mick Fitzgerald has partnered three of Henderson's four recent winners.

Although considered a fair trial for the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham later in the season, the race has failed to throw up any subsequent winners, so those considering betting on the winner in the ante-post odds betting lists might want to tread with caution.
