The hurdles highlight of the Christmas National Hunt programme, the Stan James Christmas Hurdle, is a Grade 1 event run over two miles at Kempton Park on Boxing Day and is normally a hot betting heat.
The race attracts some of the very best two-mile hurdlers around, but surprisingly has a shocking record for providing subsequent Champion hurdle winners later on in the season, so it is a race to avoid when considering the ante-post odds betting lists. Only Kribensis (winner in 1988 & 1989) has gone on to lift the Cheltenham title later on in the season, demonstrating just how different the Kempton and Cheltenham tracks are and how it is sometimes difficult to equate the form.
The last three renewals of the race have all gone to Irish-trained runners, the subjects of significant bets and who appear to have been carrying the Christmas money for the Irish racing public. It would not surprise if the sequence was continued once again this season.
