Formerly known as the Great Yorkshire Chase, the Skybet Chase is a strongly contested three-mile handicap that always provides an attractive betting challenge to the betting public.
Normally a wide open affair, the last seven winners have averaged odds of over 9/1, including surprise victors A Glass in Thyne (at odds of 16/1) in 2006, and Heidi III at odds of 20/1 in 2001.
The last two renewals were staged at Southwell during the redevelopment of Doncaster racecourse, but with the Town Moor track now back in business, the race will return to it's long term home in January 2008.
From a betting point of view the race has proved a touch nut to crack for punters with only one winning favourite (Moor Lane, 2001, at odds of 4/1) this decade. Jockey Andrew Thornton has definitely been a man to have on your side in recent years when placing a bet on the contest, having first scored on A Glass In Thyne two years ago and then again aboard Simon at odds of 9/1 in 2007.
