A good trial for the Triumph Hurdle five months later, Cheltenham's Grade 2 juvenile hurdle is a solid indicator to the leading young novice in the British Isles and has proved a fairly strong race for those at the head of the betting market.
In 2006, Alan King's Katchit justified favouritism at odds of 7/4, landing some big bets in the process, before going on to glory in the 'Triumph' the following March. Fair Along, the 2005 winner, was subsequently narrowly defeated in his 'Triumph' bid 12 months earlier.
Most recent winners of the race have come to hurdling having competed at middle distances on the flat and are already battle-hardened campaigners. Those considering a bet in the race would do well to take this into account when weighing up the odds and casting an eye down the betting list.
It is also worth bearing in mind that most winners of this hot betting heat have returned at odds of less than 6/1.
