In February 2008, the River Don Novices Hurdle returns to its traditional home at Doncaster having been staged at Wetherby the previous two years, where the race has proved a competitive betting heat.

This Grade 2 event was changed to a three-mile contest in recent years and is now seen as a stepping stone to challenges at the major novices staying hurdles at the spring festival meetings, so is likely to have a serious impact on ante-post odds betting lists.

The last two winners, Neptune Collonges (odds on at 2/5 in 2006) and Chief Dan George (8/1 in 2007), have both gone on to land some solid bets a fortnight later in the Prestige Novices Hurdle at Haydock, making this race a key clue for bets on the Haydock race if not for more long range betting opportunities at Cheltenham.

It's also worth noting that Chief Dan George went on to land a Grade 1 event at Aintree, giving the 'River Don' added ante-post betting kudos.
