A gruelling three-and-a-half mile slog, normally run on very testing ground, Haydock's Grade 3 Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, is a race for surprise results that produce winners invariably at double-figure odds.
Bets on many well supported favourites have been lost in this race in recent years, the last four winners to foil the majority of the betting public returning at odds of 12/1, 14/1, 12/1 & 10/1.
Horses with previous course form that are proven over extreme distances are well worth having on your side when considering a bet on this race, as Haydock's steep drop fences do not suit every animal. Those that have jumped around and won before on the course hold a significant advantage and should be on any betting short-list, even if coming into the race seemingly with something to prove on current form. Recent winners such as Ossmoses, The Last Fling and Young Kenny fall very much into this category.
Surprisingly, many of the major yards tend to avoid this race, possibly considering it too testing an event so close to Cheltenham and Aintree, so the ante-post betting lists aren't always affected in the way many considering a long range bet might expect.
